It departs from downtown three times daily at an economical cost of only 120 pesos per person (approx. $6). The journey will take approximately 2 and a half to 3 hours with various stops along the route; however please note that there are no toilets on-board.
To get to Chiquila, there are numerous shuttles available that offer transfers from Cancun.
Our journey to Holbox Island was made much easier thanks to the reliable Holbox Taxi Service. For just $160, a private car took us from A to B in a comfortable 2-2.5 hours!
Non-motorized transport is the only type allowed on the island; however, there are secure parking lots in Chiquila that charge an affordable rate of just $6 per day for vehicles.
Explorers heading to Holbox have the choice of two reliable ferry services, 9 Hermanos and Holbox Express. Every 30 minutes from 6:00 a.m. until 9:30 p.m., ferries depart for 140 pesos/$7 USD per passenger with tickets purchasable at the dock itself! After grabbing your ticket, it’s just a momentary stroll down to the ferry which will take you on an invigorating 20-minute ride across Chiquila bay – don’t forget to bring your luggage aboard through back entrance where there are racks provided for storage before finding yourself a seat inside or out above the cabin!
Once you get to Holbox, a few dollars for a taxi is well worth it if you have anything more than a backpack. Trying to navigate uneven sidewalks or sandy pathways with heavy luggage in tow will only cause stress and frustration. Taxis are abundant and ready to whisk you away from the airport directly to your hotel!
Holbox Island, Mexico sits roughly 37 miles or 61 kilometers away from Cancun. A car and ferry ride to the island will take about two and a half hours; however, a quick flight can get you there in only 30-35 minutes.
