Westin Resort and Spa Cancun - An Honest Review

Table of Contents

We enjoyed our stay at the Westin Resort & Spa in Cancun, Mexico. Before even entering the lobby, we were drawn to explore the property by the beautiful view of the ocean and palm trees.

One of our favorite features of the hotel was seeing the palm trees and iguanas on the grounds. We were impressed to learn that the hotel takes an active role in ensuring the health and welfare of the iguanas, which I’ll explain more in detail later.

The Ambience

I was impressed by how beautiful and spacious the lobby looked. I was especially thrilled to see outlets and USB jacks built into all the couches. It’s a great little convenience for travelers.

The check-in process was quick and efficient. A bellman helped us load our luggage onto a golf cart and drove us to the quieter club side of the resort, although in my opinion, the entire resort is already very peaceful. Additionally, all rooms are located away from the lobby, providing a relaxing and tranquil environment.

You can easily reach: Bus stop, nice Restaurants, Clubs and bars like Coco bongo, the Senor Frogm, La Vaquita, , The City and others.

)Train station and beach are nearby. Grocery stores and a Walmart. You can do some souvenir shopping at  Plaza Kukulkan, Plaza las Americas, La Isla Walmart and Other malls. You can also reach Mercado 28 with a taxi or rental car (using an uber is not recommended while in Cancun

The Pools

We enjoyed the various pools available, including the FlowRider. However, our favorite was the main pool which had a swim-up bar. It was great to be able to order drinks like pina coladas and strawberry smoothies by just providing our room number. We loved the feeling of freedom while sitting at the bar and admiring the ocean view. We also enjoyed planning our meal for the day during this time.

There are five different pools with varying atmospheres. Our room’s “L shaped” pool is peaceful and calm. The Lagoon pool, which has a lovely lagoon view, is ideal for younger kids since it is shallower. The primary pool is massive and suitable for both adults and children with a lot of space for games. The two other pools have a quieter environment, but are still accessible. Lastly, there is the spa whirlpool which provides a breathtaking ocean view and is extremely soothing.

The Beach

I had a great time at the beach of Westin Resort & Spa. They have a good number of lounge chairs and umbrellas for guests to use. I liked that they had a full-sized volleyball net available, but it was entertaining to watch younger kids attempt to play on it. Additionally, a professional lifeguard was on duty for guests’ safety.

While the beach was beautiful, the ocean waves were strong when we were there. Clint didn’t seem to mind and went in for a bit. We also noticed many people taking a leisurely walk on the beach.

Restaurants and Dining

The Westin Resort & Spa has four restaurants and a market available. The Westin Beach Club serves continental breakfast and a lunch menu featuring bar food. Sabor Casual Kitchen provides a full buffet breakfast and omelet station. Arena Sports Bar has plenty of TVs showing different sports games and offers a lunch and dinner bar food menu.

If you’re interested in having dinner by the beach, Sea & Stone Restaurant is an excellent option with its sophisticated menu and attentive service. We dined there on our first night and our meal was delightful. We even had gluten-free brownies for dessert while enjoying the view!

At the Palmer Market and Starbucks, guests can find a range of items to enjoy, such as water shoes, sand toys, cookies, and cold drinks. The variety of options available means that guests would not necessarily have to leave the resort if they didn’t want to.

The Spa

The spa is located right beside the fitness studio and offers various treatments to guests. One of its notable features is an outdoor massage experience, with massage tables placed under thatched huts, allowing guests to have a relaxing massage.

The Westin Resort & Spa offers 2 full-size astroturf tennis courts and a fully equipped WORKOUT Fitness studio available for guests to use. The staff I interacted with were helpful and available to assist with any equipment or questions.

Things to Do

The Westin Resort and Spa provides Club Membership similar to timeshare. Guests with this membership can enjoy an outdoor grilling station and lounge area overlooking the lagoon pool. Although the resort has a beautiful sandy beach with lounge chairs and thatched huts overlooking the lagoon, swimming is not allowed in the lagoon. Nonetheless, the area is pleasant, roomy, and peaceful.

For Families

The kids club at The Westin Resort & Spa offers various activities for children, including theater, arts and crafts, and an outdoor play area. The resort also has a group of activity leaders who organize family activities such as yoga, volleyball, Aguagym, and Spanish lessons.. All the activities have prizes available to win, which makes them even more enjoyable.

During one of the activities, the children learned to feed the iguanas using the fruits provided by the staff. The staff member had a plate of cantaloupe, guava, and honeydew melon, as well as wood skewers. The children were taught to be calm and quiet while feeding the iguanas, who would then take the fruit off the skewers. It was mentioned that there are 22 iguanas at the resort, and the staff keep a record of them. We were also informed that female iguanas do not have spikes on their backs, while male iguanas do.

The Rooms

I was pleasantly surprised by how spacious our room was, complete with a vaulted ceiling and a balcony that overlooked the lagoon and ocean. While on the balcony, we watched as some brave souls tried their hand at water skiing. There were even two chairs and a table for us to sit and relax. In the morning, it was especially lovely to simply listen to the birds chirping. Additionally, our room featured a large desk area which I found very useful.

Our room had a range of amenities including a dresser, TV, coffee station, small refrigerator, closet and bathroom. Inside the closet, we found an ironing board, iron, safe, and shelves. The heavenly towels in the bathroom were large and soft. The soaking tub and shower were separate, and the girls loved taking baths during our stay. We also had a good supply of bath accessories. One delightful touch was that we received two one-liter bottles of water each day.

Bottom Line: Westin Cancun Resort and Spa

We had a great time at the Westin Resort & Spa Cancun. The staff were helpful and kind and oh so friendly. Evelyn had pancakes several mornings for breakfast which they made specially just for her. It really seems that the people who worked here enjoyed their jobs which in turn shows to the guests.

Traveling to 🇲🇽 Mexico soon?

I recommend these travel resources for Mexico that I personally use:

🏨 Hotels: I have found that Expedia and Booking.com consistently have the best deals on hotels and resorts in Mexico. If you prefer to stay at a vacation rental, check VRBO that is usually cheaper than AirBnB’s added fees!

✈️ Flights: To find the best flight deals to Mexico, I always use Kayak. Remember to subscribe to their price alerts for the travel dates you want. Another great alternative for flight deals is Expedia.

🚗 Rental Cars: I always use and highly recommend Discover Cars because it allows me to compare several car rental companies and view ratings on various factors such as overall value, pick-up procedure, agent efficiency, car condition, and total time taken.

🚙 Cancun Airport Transportation: For the fastest and easiest way to travel, I suggest arranging a private transfer with Cancun Airport Transportation. Honestly, no better way to travel from the airport to your hotel or resort.

🤿 Tours & Activities: For tours and activities in Mexico, I highly recommend using either Viator or GetYourGuide. These websites offer a full refund if you cancel your booking 24 hours before the start of the tour, and they also provide excellent customer service in case of any issues.

🚨 Travel Insurance: I always suggest purchasing travel insurance as a precaution before traveling, especially after a recent accident in a taxi in Mexico. For short trips, I recommend Travel Insurance Master, whereas for digital nomads, Safety Wing is a better option.

📷 Best Camera for your trip: I always carry with me a GoPro, It’s light, compact, takes great video and pictures, and most importantly, it’s waterproof! You just can’t go wrong with one. If you are interested in higher quality video and photography, I always carry with me on my trips and highly recommend the Sony A7IV which I think is the best travel DSLR Camera out there.

☀️ Biodegradable Sunscreen: Remember to include a good sunscreen to protect yourself from the summer sun. I always use and suggest Sun Bum Sunscreen, which is vegan, reef-friendly, and cruelty-free.
