Pueblo (Tulum Town) Guide

Tulum has two main areas: The Beach and the Town (Pueblo). Most first-time visitors to Tulum will wonder whether they should stay on the Beach or in the town center (Pueblo).

Thankfully we have a guide that can help you make the right choice:

In this guide, we will be focusing on the lively Pueblo of Tulum.

The Town (Pueblo) is located a few miles off the beach. It is a quick 10 -15 minute taxi or a 20-minute bike ride to the Beach from the Town Center.

In the heart of Pueblo is a beautiful central plaza that offers a variety of tasty and authentic Mexican restaurants and plenty of entertainment options … from low-key bars to intense nightclubs and parties.

Tulum Town has a mix of affordable and less expensive midrange hotels and hostels. All accommodations in the Pueblo offer air-conditioning. The accommodations at the beach rely on more on the breeze and some eco-friendly techniques to cool the rooms.

The Town is popular very with travelers that are seeking a more genuine Mexican experience. Pueblo as it offers a more authentic Mexican lifestyle than the Beach with cute coffee shops, beautiful local crafts and fresh produce street markets that you will find strolling around the town’s stores.

Tulum is not an affordable destination anymore and Tulum Town is very attractive for those that are on a budget. Pueblo is home to a wide selection of affordable lodging, casual dining options, cheap pubs, and unpretentious night and dance clubs.

Tulum Pueblo’s accommodations range from affordable guesthouses and hostels to mid-range hotels and various rental apartments and properties.

Tulum Town is also home to a number of casual bars and nightclubs. You can enjoy a refreshing cocktail and party until the morning in one of the many bars and clubs on the streets of Tulum. Just make sure you drink and party responsibly and are always aware of your surroundings especially at night. Tulum is generally safe but there has been an alarming rise in crime in the last few years.

The Pueblo is also our favorite location for exploring the region and the numerous activities that you can do in the area. The Mayan ruins, some of the cenotes (natural sinkholes filled with water), the beach, and a variety of other activities are only a short bike ride or taxi ride away.

Pueblo is also very popular with wellness travelers and wannabe yogis as it is home to a large number of yoga studios, gyms, and other wellness facilities.

FAQ

Most frequent questions and answers

The Pueblo (Tulum Town), the Beach Zone and the Middle Beach Zone are by far the places to stay in Tulum if you want to enjoy Tulum’s nightlife. The South Beach Zone and Aldea Zama are best for families with kids. The North or South Beach Zone are more quiet and ideal for a more romantic experience and honeymoons (though in all honesty pretty much each and every part of Tulum is nearly perfect for a honeymoon holiday).

Absolutely! Actually biking is the best way to experience Tulum.

Traveling to 🇲🇽 Mexico soon?

I recommend these travel resources for Mexico that I personally use:

🏨 Hotels: I have found that Expedia and Booking.com consistently have the best deals on hotels and resorts in Mexico. If you prefer to stay at a vacation rental, check VRBO that is usually cheaper than AirBnB’s added fees!

✈️ Flights: To find the best flight deals to Mexico, I always use Kayak. Remember to subscribe to their price alerts for the travel dates you want. Another great alternative for flight deals is Expedia.

🚗 Rental Cars: I always use and highly recommend Discover Cars because it allows me to compare several car rental companies and view ratings on various factors such as overall value, pick-up procedure, agent efficiency, car condition, and total time taken.

🚙 Cancun Airport Transportation: For the fastest and easiest way to travel, I suggest arranging a private transfer with Cancun Airport Transportation. Honestly, no better way to travel from the airport to your hotel or resort.

🤿 Tours & Activities: For tours and activities in Mexico, I highly recommend using either Viator or GetYourGuide. These websites offer a full refund if you cancel your booking 24 hours before the start of the tour, and they also provide excellent customer service in case of any issues.

🚨 Travel Insurance: I always suggest purchasing travel insurance as a precaution before traveling, especially after a recent accident in a taxi in Mexico. For short trips, I recommend Travel Insurance Master, whereas for digital nomads, Safety Wing is a better option.

📷 Best Camera for your trip: I always carry with me a GoPro, It’s light, compact, takes great video and pictures, and most importantly, it’s waterproof! You just can’t go wrong with one. If you are interested in higher quality video and photography, I always carry with me on my trips and highly recommend the Sony A7IV which I think is the best travel DSLR Camera out there.

☀️ Biodegradable Sunscreen: Remember to include a good sunscreen to protect yourself from the summer sun. I always use and suggest Sun Bum Sunscreen, which is vegan, reef-friendly, and cruelty-free.
