Smaragdi Hotel Santorini - An Honest Review

Table of Contents

The Ambience

The style of the building is a mix of traditional Cycladic and Mediterranean with some colorful touches and beautiful gardens full of flowers. The Smaragdi Hotel has a unique and charming atmosphere that sets it apart from other mid-range hotels. The grounds feature vibrant gardens with rock formations and colorful flowers connected by stone and brick pathways.

The hotel’s architecture is inspired by the traditional Cycladic style but with a more cheerful color scheme of yellow and mahogany accents instead of the usual white and blue. The lobby is tiled and spacious, with arched ceilings and wooden furniture.

Artworks such as paintings and sculptures mostly depicting the Cyclades can be found everywhere, along with creatively repurposed items. There is even a small outdoor space where art is made. However, the furniture has signs of wear and tear, and the walls are mostly bare, giving the property a dated feel.

The poolside bar has a relaxed atmosphere and includes a seating area with tables and chairs that are shaded. To add a nice touch, each table has a small succulent in a colored pot, which is an example of the hotel’s attention to detail. Families mainly stay at the hotel, but please be aware that the kids’ playground is located on gravel and may not be appropriate for very young children.

The Location

One of Santorini’s most beautiful beaches is located just a few hundred feet away. The Smaragdi Hotel is situated in the Perissa area of Santorini, just a short walk away from the stunning black pebble beach of Perivolos – known to be the most beautiful beach in Santorini.

Beach enthusiasts can participate in various activities or simply relax on sun chairs. There are several restaurants, bars, and shops within a few minutes walk from the hotel. In order to get to the capital, Fira or Oia, one would need a car for a 20-minute or 30-minute drive, respectively. Santorini Airport can be reached within a 20-minute drive from the hotel.

The Rooms

Different room categories cater to different needs, all of which are equipped with kitchenettes and balconies and offer beautiful views. The spacious rooms ensure a comfortable stay.

Smaragdi Hotel has 41 rooms divided into four different categories. Each room has its own unique character, ranging from basic Petit Budget rooms to luxurious Honeymoon Suites with whirlpools. Families traveling with children might prefer the spacious Double-level Deluxe Apartment units, while those looking to save money may find the no-frills Petit Budget rooms suitable despite their worn furniture and old-fashioned tube TVs.

All rooms are clean and come with air conditioning, large balconies or patios, and stunning views of the sea or mountains. The medium-sized kitchenettes come equipped with kettles, mini-fridges, and all the necessary dishes and utensils for a self-catered holiday. Additionally, higher category accommodations feature flat-screen TVs.

Features

The main attraction is a spacious outdoor pool area that includes a hot tub. One of the main attractions of this hotel is its location very close to the renowned Perivolos beaches that are primarily composed of black pebbles. On the premises, guests can enjoy a fabulous pool area inspired by the Polynesian tiki culture, with ample sun loungers, thatched umbrellas, a bar serving snacks and drinks, and a spacious hot tub.

Although there isn’t a full-service restaurant available, guests can place orders at the pool bar during specific times or make use of the hotel’s outdoor barbecue facilities. The hotel offers breakfast for an additional charge. In addition to the playground on the premises, the hotel has extra activities for children. Free Wi-Fi and private parking are included with the stay.

Bottom Line

The Smaragdi is a mid-range hotel with 41 rooms close to Perivolos Beach, considered one of the best beaches in Santorini.

The hotel features lovely and lively gardens, making it a suitable place for families. Although the hotel doesn’t have an on-site restaurant, every room has a kitchenette, and there’s a poolside snack bar and barbecue area available.

The place has a children’s playground and is perfect for people looking for an affordable and peaceful stay in Perrisa. The room decor is plain, and the cheaper rooms are small with outdated tube TVs.

Traveling to 🇬🇷 Greece soon?

I recommend these travel resources for Greece that I personally use:

🏨 Hotels: I have found that Expedia and Booking.com consistently have the best deals on hotels and resorts in Greece. If you prefer to stay at a vacation rental, check VRBO that is usually cheaper than AirBnB’s added fees!

✈️ Flights: To find the best flight deals to Greece, I always use Kayak. Remember to subscribe to their price alerts for the travel dates you want. Another great alternative for flight deals is Expedia.

🚗 Rental Cars: I always use and highly recommend Discover Cars because it allows me to compare several car rental companies and view ratings on various factors such as overall value, pick-up procedure, agent efficiency, car condition, and total time taken.

🚙 Airport Transportation: For the fastest and easiest way to travel, I suggest arranging a private transfer from the airport and beetween destinations with Welcome Pickups. Honestly, no better way to travel from the airport to your hotel or resort.

🤿 Tours & Activities: For tours and activities in Greece, I highly recommend using either Viator or GetYourGuide. These websites offer a full refund if you cancel your booking 24 hours before the start of the tour, and they also provide excellent customer service in case of any issues.

🚨 Travel Insurance: I always suggest purchasing travel insurance as a precaution before traveling, especially after a recent accident in a taxi in Greece. For short trips, I recommend Travel Insurance Master, whereas for digital nomads, Safety Wing is a better option.

📷 Best Camera for your trip: I always carry with me a GoPro, It’s light, compact, takes great video and pictures, and most importantly, it’s waterproof! You just can’t go wrong with one. If you are interested in higher quality video and photography, I always carry with me on my trips and highly recommend the Sony A7IV which I think is the best travel DSLR Camera out there.

☀️ Biodegradable Sunscreen: Remember to include a good sunscreen to protect yourself from the summer sun. I always use and suggest Sun Bum Sunscreen, which is vegan, reef-friendly, and cruelty-free.
