Isla Mujeres History
Isla Mujeres is an island that has been loved by both locals and visitors for centuries.
During the 1500s, it was a holy place for the Maya people to worship Goddess Ixchel, who was the goddess of moonlight, healing arts, and fertility. There is evidence that suggests there was a temple dedicated to her on the island’s southern tip, which was also used as a beacon for salt harvesting.
Isla Mujeres has a rich history, and it’s no surprise that it’s become such a beloved destination. In 1517, Francisco Hernandez de Cordoba stumbled upon the island, not realizing that it had been a sacred place for the Maya people for centuries.

Isla Mujeres Today
Today, Isla Mujeres is a paradise that provides a peaceful retreat away from the hustle and bustle of Cancun. The island’s stunning beaches, friendly locals, and delicious cuisine make it a perfect destination for visitors of all ages. While some tourists only stay for a day, there are plenty of activities to keep you entertained if you decide to extend your stay.
When is The Best Time to Visit Isla Mujeres?
Isla Mujeres has a tropical climate and maintains a consistent temperature of around 83 degrees Fahrenheit all year round, making it a great vacation spot regardless of the time of year.
If you’re looking to avoid crowds, the months of May through October tend to have fewer tourists and lower rates for hotels, resorts, and tour companies. However, it’s important to note that this time of year is also the hottest and rainiest, so be prepared for the occasional downpour.
On the other hand, if you prefer cooler temperatures and lower humidity levels, then November through April may be the better choice for you. The hurricane season has ended by November, so you can enjoy the beautiful scenery without worrying about extreme weather conditions.
When Is Isla Mujeres Hurricane Season?
May marks the start of Isla Mujeres’ hurricane season, persisting until early November and peaking from August to October. It’s rare for a hurricane to strike Isla Mujeres — only six have done so in the last four decades — but hurricanes passing nearby could still generate extreme conditions.
To make sure your trip is as safe as possible during this time, we strongly advise keeping an eye on the weather reports leading up to your visit. Additionally, investing in travel insurance is a smart move, as it provides an extra layer of security in case anything unexpected happens.
How to Get to Isla Mujeres & Around?
If you’re planning a trip to Isla Mujeres, there are plenty of ways to get around and explore the island. Here’s a rundown of your options.
First off, if you’re staying at a hotel, it’s worth asking if they offer complimentary transportation to and from the island. Some of the larger hotels do provide this service.
Arriving by ferry is a popular option. You can take a short taxi or bus ride from Cancun to the Puerto Juárez ferry terminal. From there, you can purchase tickets for the ferry at Gran Puerto Cancun (Ultramar) for a reasonable price: 160 pesos one-way, 300 pesos round-trip. Ferries depart every half hour from 5:00 am to 9:30 pm, and then hourly after that. The trip takes just 15 minutes, and before you know it, you’ll be exploring Isla Mujeres.
Catamaran Tours
Arrival By Catamaran Day Cruise
Another great option is to take a catamaran day cruise from Cancun or Playa del Carmen. These full-day trips offer snorkeling, sightseeing, and unlimited rum punch and buffet lunch. It’s a fantastic way to see the island, even if you only have one day to spare.
Rent A Golf Cart
If you want to explore the island on your own, renting a golf cart is an excellent choice. You can rent them in Rueda Medina, but be sure to check that the cart is in good condition before you rent it. Prices are generally the same across all providers, so choose quality and service over cost.
Hire a Taxi
Taxis are another option, and they’re easy to find all over the island. Just be sure to negotiate prices before you go to avoid getting overcharged. Whether you need one called by your hotel or if it’s just walking around and flagging them down, they’re everywhere.
Rent a Bicycle
Finally, if you’re looking for some exercise, renting a bicycle is a great way to see the island. Prices range from $10-20 per day, and locks are included with the rental. Just make sure to check the condition of the bike before you start your adventure.

Traveling to 🇲🇽 Mexico soon?
I recommend these travel resources for Mexico that I personally use:
🏨 Hotels: I have found that Expedia and Booking.com consistently have the best deals on hotels and resorts in Mexico. If you prefer to stay at a vacation rental, check VRBO that is usually cheaper than AirBnB’s added fees!
✈️ Flights: To find the best flight deals to Mexico, I always use Kayak. Remember to subscribe to their price alerts for the travel dates you want. Another great alternative for flight deals is Expedia.
🚗 Rental Cars: I always use and highly recommend Discover Cars because it allows me to compare several car rental companies and view ratings on various factors such as overall value, pick-up procedure, agent efficiency, car condition, and total time taken.
🚙 CancunAirport Transportation: For the fastest and easiest way to travel, I suggest arranging a private transfer with Cancun Airport Transportation. Honestly, no better way to travel from the airport to your hotel or resort.
🤿 Tours & Activities: For tours and activities in Mexico, I highly recommend using either Viator or GetYourGuide. These websites offer a full refund if you cancel your booking 24 hours before the start of the tour, and they also provide excellent customer service in case of any issues.
🚨 Travel Insurance: I always suggest purchasing travel insurance as a precaution before traveling, especially after a recent accident in a taxi in Mexico. For short trips, I recommend Travel Insurance Master, whereas for digital nomads, Safety Wing is a better option.
📷 Best Camera for your trip: I always carry with me a GoPro, It’s light, compact, takes great video and pictures, and most importantly, it’s waterproof! You just can’t go wrong with one. If you are interested in higher quality video and photography, I always carry with me on my trips and highly recommend the Sony A7IV which I think is the best travel DSLR Camera out there.
☀️ Biodegradable Sunscreen: Remember to include a good sunscreen to protect yourself from the summer sun. I always use and suggest Sun Bum Sunscreen, which is vegan, reef-friendly, and cruelty-free.
