The Location

Iberostar Quetzal is an all-inclusive resort located next to Iberostar Tucan, both of which are beachfront properties. Families staying at Iberostar Quetzal can enjoy the facilities of both resorts. The resort is surrounded by lush tropical jungle, making it an ideal spot for a Caribbean vacation. Despite being secluded, it is only a few minutes away from downtown Playa del Carmen (also known as “Playa” locally).

It means that Playa del Carmen offers a unique combination of experiences. Originally a fishing village, it has now become a popular vacation destination. The lively 5th Avenue features a variety of shops, restaurants, and nightlife, and is exclusively for pedestrians, designed to cater to every tourist’s needs.

You will also have the chance to visit Tulum and Puerto Morelos, as well as experience the amazing diving and snorkeling opportunities around Cozumel. At this hotel, you can make the most of the beautiful white sand beaches and crystal-clear waters that attract tourists from all over the world to Mexico’s Caribbean coast.

The location is conveniently around 35 minutes away from Cancun’s International Airport, which is beneficial for international travelers (Cancun Aiport Map).

The rooms with a view of the jungle and flamingo pond are perfect for those who love nature. It’s a wonderful experience to wake up to the beautiful sights and soothing sounds of the thriving Riviera Maya by simply opening your patio doors in the morning while on vacation.

The Beach

This hotel boasts one of the most popular beaches in Playa del Carmen, known as Playacar. The beach features white sand and beautiful shades of turquoise in the ocean. It’s a perfect representation of Caribbean paradise. Compared to other hotels near downtown Playa del Carmen, not all of them have the luxury of having such an amazing beach.

This is a great spot for relaxation and vacation. Playacar beach is quiet and natural with beautiful palm trees providing shade. You can swim in the ocean without worrying about a strong outer reef break. The waves are gentle, perfect for floating. You can enter the water without shoes since the sand is soft and smooth.

Restaurants and Dining

I found the dining options at Iberostar Quetzal to be impressive. The resort offers eight restaurants featuring local and international cuisine such as Japanese, Mexican, and Italian. The buffet located by the waterfalls is especially noteworthy for its peaceful atmosphere, delicious food, and quick service from the chefs to refill empty dishes.

The resort offers the following number of dinner reservations at specialty restaurants based on the length of your stay:

– 1 dinner for guests staying 3 nights.

– 2 dinners for guests staying 4-6 nights.

– 3 dinners for guests staying 7-9 nights.

– 4 dinners for guests staying 10-11 nights.

– 5 dinners for guests staying 12 or more nights.

In addition, there are 3 bars, a plaza, and an ice cream stand available if you want to grab a snack during the day.

Room service is available from 11 am to 11 pm and is included in the price. It typically takes around 15 minutes to arrive. The resort has several bars where you can enjoy a variety of cocktails and beverages either poolside or in an elegant setting. Additionally, you can visit the Mask Disco to have a fun experience during your stay.

The Surrounding

The Iberostar Quetzal has been certified by Green Globe. This indicates that the hotel is devoted to cultural and environmental sustainability and aims to preserve resources in Mexico. It is an excellent choice for travelers who are environmentally conscious. The hotel is designed to resemble the unspoiled nature of the region and showcases the rich archaeological Mayan history of the area. Additionally, there is a large jungle area between the Tucan and Quetzal properties, which is easily accessible by a well-laid stone pathway.

You are welcome to explore this area freely, day or night. The place is well-lit at night and is home to various bird species and howler monkeys. If you hear rustling in the trees, don’t forget to look up and see these unique animals. You can bring small binoculars to observe them up close in their natural habitat if you enjoy watching animals. It’s an experience you won’t forget!

Vacations should not just be about trying out drinks from the all-inclusive cocktail list, although it can be tempting. Instead, they should be about rediscovering nature and rejuvenating yourself. Choosing this hotel can provide you with the opportunity to do exactly that. You would feel like you are on an archaeological adventure in a rainforest.

Firstly, at this all-inclusive hotel, you can explore actual ruins from the Mayan civilization. Additionally, the hotel’s architecture pays homage to Mayan culture, with palm tree leaf and limestone designs, as well as replicated statues of Mayan gods, each with their own unique story.

As you walk around, you’ll be surrounded by ponds, lagoons, and caves, all accompanied by the peaceful sounds of nature. The hotel’s woodsy décor, warm colors, and open-air ambiance create a sense of being in harmony with nature.

The Clubs

Families can take comfort in knowing that the hotel prioritizes the happiness of children during their stay. Parents can relax while their kids, between ages 4-12, engage in supervised play at Lucy’s Club. Children can participate in a variety of activities, games, and even watch movies while enjoying the company of others. This allows parents an opportunity to have some quiet time.

If you are staying with your teenage children and are concerned about how to keep them entertained, don’t worry. This resort offers a variety of activities throughout the day specifically designed for guests over the age of 12. The resort’s animation team is incredibly friendly and I am confident that both you and your teens will enjoy their company.

If you take the time to chat with the staff, they will make an effort to remember your name and greet you whenever they see you around the hotel, which creates a personalized and genuine experience. Additionally, the hotel offers live performances and music in the evenings that cater to guests of all ages. Get ready to be amazed and pulled onto the dance floor during your stay.

Things to Do

The Iberostar Quetzal offers a wide range of entertainment and leisure activities such as scuba diving, kayaking, tennis, yoga, archery, and air gun tournaments, making it perfect for your entire family.

Here are some of the activities available on the property: Beach Volleyball, Windsurfing, Bike Rental, Dance Classes, Onsite Dive Center, Ping Pong. The pools shared with the Tucan property are quite large, and include a specialized activities pool, a quiet pool for adults, a kiddie pool, and an aqua-bar.

The Spa

Would you like to treat yourself to a full body massage? Visit the modern spa at Iberostar Quetzal for a top-notch pampering session. You can enjoy a range of services and treatments, such as jacuzzi tubs, massages, facials, and Turkish baths. The resort also offers ocean treatments at two beach palapas where you can listen to the sound of waves. Are you excited?

Fitness Center

Is it really impossible to maintain your fitness goals during an extended vacation? In my opinion, taking a break is even more reason to stay active. You can achieve a great beach body at Iberostar Quetzal by exercising in a fully air-conditioned area with your favorite music using all the necessary equipment. So go ahead and indulge in that extra taco without any guilt!

Wireless internet is accessible all over the hotel, including the rooms, and is included in the resort fees. So, if you don’t want to disconnect entirely during your vacation, you can stay connected.

Wheelchair Accessibility

The Iberostar Quetzal has limited accessibility, and some areas may not be accessible by the direct route. The hotel has two adapted rooms on each side, Quetzal and Tucan, but they are located closer to the lobby and further from the beach. Please note that one of the rooms on the Quetzal side (room 2911) is situated next to a disco, so consider this when selecting your room.

Due to the noise, guests frequently ask for a room change. Accessible rooms have larger roll-in shower stalls and smoother entrances compared to regular rooms. If you require assistance, the Customer Service team is always available to help.

Benefits and Perks

During your stay at Iberostar Quetzal, you can visit Iberostar Paraiso Beach, Iberostar Paraiso del Mar, and Iberostar Cozumel resorts for free from 9 am to 6 pm. However, you will have to pay extra for night passes and arrange your own transportation. You can take advantage of all the facilities, activities, and dining options available at these resorts.

If you’re staying for more than 7 nights, it’s a good idea to try different activities. I suggest taking the morning ferry to Iberostar Cozumel by crossing the sea from Playa del Carmen. It’s an affordable and convenient option as Playa del Carmen has direct access to the ferry port.

Weddings and Larger Groups

The Quetzal Resort by Iberostar offers an all-inclusive tropical luxury experience, ideal for hosting your special event. The resort has various beautiful locations for your ceremony, inspired by the region’s rich history and stunning natural beauty.

If you’re planning to have a destination wedding in Playa del Carmen, Iberostar hotels have got you covered. They offer three wedding packages starting from $999, with options to add extra features for you and your guests.

Day Passes

You can purchase day passes to this hotel if you are only passing by and want to see it for yourself. The rates for the day passes are as follows: $1000 pesos (approx $57) for 8am to 6pm and $760 pesos (approx $43) for 6pm to 3am. When compared to other hotels in the area, these day pass rates are very affordable. With the day pass, you can access all of the hotel’s facilities and enjoy unlimited food and beverages.

Things We Didn’t Like

Overall, I really enjoy staying at this hotel. However, I have a couple of concerns. Firstly, I think the hotel should consider positioning their wheelchair-accessible rooms closer to the beach and pool areas. Secondly, if you are a light sleeper and your room overlooks the jungle, there may be some nights where you are awakened by the sounds of howler monkeys or birds.

Bottom Line: Iberostar Quetzal

The hotel is very impressive and the staff is outstanding, providing excellent service. It’s a great resort for families because of the many activities and affordable room options. The location is a bonus, being close to downtown Playa and having a stunning beach at Playacar. Staying here is a good choice and you’ll probably want to come back again soon.

Traveling to 🇲🇽 Mexico soon?

I recommend these travel resources for Mexico that I personally use:

🏨 Hotels: I have found that Expedia and Booking.com consistently have the best deals on hotels and resorts in Mexico. If you prefer to stay at a vacation rental, check VRBO that is usually cheaper than AirBnB’s added fees!

✈️ Flights: To find the best flight deals to Mexico, I always use Kayak. Remember to subscribe to their price alerts for the travel dates you want. Another great alternative for flight deals is Expedia.

🚗 Rental Cars: I always use and highly recommend Discover Cars because it allows me to compare several car rental companies and view ratings on various factors such as overall value, pick-up procedure, agent efficiency, car condition, and total time taken.

🚙 Cancun Airport Transportation: For the fastest and easiest way to travel, I suggest arranging a private transfer with Cancun Airport Transportation. Honestly, no better way to travel from the airport to your hotel or resort.

🤿 Tours & Activities: For tours and activities in Mexico, I highly recommend using either Viator or GetYourGuide. These websites offer a full refund if you cancel your booking 24 hours before the start of the tour, and they also provide excellent customer service in case of any issues.

🚨 Travel Insurance: I always suggest purchasing travel insurance as a precaution before traveling, especially after a recent accident in a taxi in Mexico. For short trips, I recommend Travel Insurance Master, whereas for digital nomads, Safety Wing is a better option.

📷 Best Camera for your trip: I always carry with me a GoPro, It’s light, compact, takes great video and pictures, and most importantly, it’s waterproof! You just can’t go wrong with one. If you are interested in higher quality video and photography, I always carry with me on my trips and highly recommend the Sony A7IV which I think is the best travel DSLR Camera out there.

☀️ Biodegradable Sunscreen: Remember to include a good sunscreen to protect yourself from the summer sun. I always use and suggest Sun Bum Sunscreen, which is vegan, reef-friendly, and cruelty-free.
