How Big Is Mykonos?

Are you curious about Mykonos and what makes it unique? Despite its small size, Mykonos is a popular destination that can be easily explored. As one of the smallest Cycladic islands, it has a relatively low population but is visited by tourists worldwide. It’s a great spot for a summer vacation.

Compared to other Greek islands, it is relatively small, with an area of 33 sq mi (85.5 km²). Yet, despite its small size, it is a remarkable destination that stands out from any other place in Greece or even Europe.

Mykonos is approximately 6.2 miles (10 km) long and 9.3 miles (15 km) wide. Therefore, it should take about 40 minutes to drive from the east to the west part of the island, which covers the longest road.

Where Is Mykonos Located?

Mykonos is one of the islands in The Cyclades – an island group in the southern part of the Aegean archipelago. The Cyclades contains multiple islands, and Mykonos benefits from a mild Mediterranean climate, ensuring pleasant weather all year round.

Although it is small, this Greek island has plenty of attractions, a vibrant nightlife, and stunning beaches.

Can You Walk Around Mykonos?

If hiking is not your cup of tea, don’t worry. Unlike Santorini, this place is not famous for hiking. It is mostly flat and urbanized, and you won’t come across the same rocky paths as in other Cyclades islands. However, strolling to some of the most beautiful beaches can be a delightful experience. Just remember to apply some sunscreen.

The island experiences strong winds year round, keeping the temperatures pleasant and not too hot. You can explore the main town and its stunning views on foot. If you get tired, take a break and relax at the beach.

One option for a walking tour is to start at Chora and walk four miles to the Armenistis Lighthouse. Another option is to join an organized hiking tour that includes a three-mile round-trip to Mersini Beach and a traditional lunch at the Mykonian Spiti Farm.

How big is Santorini compared to the Mykonos?

Mykonos is larger than Santorini by about 10%. Santorini’s area is 76.2 sq km, and Mykonos’s area is 85.5 sq km. Mykonos is known for its beautiful views from the hills, windmills with historical significance, and high-end seafood restaurants. It is located 150 km/ 93 miles north of Santorini and 150 km/ 93 miles south of Athens.

Population of Mykonos

Recent records show that about 12,500 people live there, predominantly Greek, with most residing in Chora. However, the number of tourists annually visiting the island is staggering, with over 550,000 reviews attesting to its popularity. Keep in mind how relatively small the island is.

Mykonos is welcoming to all tourists, and many hotels and luxury villas in Mykonos can accommodate entire families and large groups of friends. Greek people are known for their exceptional hospitality, so you’ll receive top-notch treatment no matter where you stay.

How Much Time is Needed to See Mykonos?

If you plan your vacation with many activities, you can cover the essential ones in 3-4 days. However, you can choose to stay longer and take your time to enjoy everything.

You can visit beautiful beaches, explore the main town and Little Venice, enjoy the nightlife, party at famous beach clubs like Paradise, and even take a trip to the nearby island of Delos – all in just a few days.

Alternatively, you can rent a private yacht with your friends to appreciate the beauty of the island from a unique perspective. Mykonos is known for its hedonistic culture, so make sure to fully embrace it.

Traveling to 🇬🇷 Greece soon?

I recommend these travel resources for Greece that I personally use:

🏨 Hotels: I have found that Expedia and Booking.com consistently have the best deals on hotels and resorts in Greece. If you prefer to stay at a vacation rental, check VRBO that is usually cheaper than AirBnB’s added fees!

✈️ Flights: To find the best flight deals to Greece, I always use Kayak. Remember to subscribe to their price alerts for the travel dates you want. Another great alternative for flight deals is Expedia.

🚗 Rental Cars: I always use and highly recommend Discover Cars because it allows me to compare several car rental companies and view ratings on various factors such as overall value, pick-up procedure, agent efficiency, car condition, and total time taken.

🚙 Airport Transportation: For the fastest and easiest way to travel, I suggest arranging a private transfer from the airport and beetween destinations with Welcome Pickups. Honestly, no better way to travel from the airport to your hotel or resort.

🤿 Tours & Activities: For tours and activities in Greece, I highly recommend using either Viator or GetYourGuide. These websites offer a full refund if you cancel your booking 24 hours before the start of the tour, and they also provide excellent customer service in case of any issues.

🚨 Travel Insurance: I always suggest purchasing travel insurance as a precaution before traveling, especially after a recent accident in a taxi in Greece. For short trips, I recommend Travel Insurance Master, whereas for digital nomads, Safety Wing is a better option.

📷 Best Camera for your trip: I always carry with me a GoPro, It’s light, compact, takes great video and pictures, and most importantly, it’s waterproof! You just can’t go wrong with one. If you are interested in higher quality video and photography, I always carry with me on my trips and highly recommend the Sony A7IV which I think is the best travel DSLR Camera out there.

☀️ Biodegradable Sunscreen: Remember to include a good sunscreen to protect yourself from the summer sun. I always use and suggest Sun Bum Sunscreen, which is vegan, reef-friendly, and cruelty-free.
