I want to clarify that when I said it snows in Mexico, I did not mean that every part of the country gets snow. However, there are a few areas in Mexico, mainly in the northern regions, that receive some amount of snowfall each year.

Mexiquillo is a stunning forest located northeast of Mexico City that covers 52 square miles of land. It is known for having beautiful waterfalls and forests, making it an ideal location to experience Mexican snowfall. The best time to visit Mexiquillo and see the snow is between December and February when temperatures reach their lowest.
To get here, you can take a bus from La Cuidad. However, please note that there is only one restaurant in the entire area, so it’s advisable to bring your own food. It’s also a good idea to bring a raincoat along with your winter gear. Mexiquillo is an ideal place for adventurers, hikers, and families, with numerous cabanas available for lodging.

During the final months of the year, the canyons are blanketed in snow, creating an extraordinary sight. The Rarámuri people, who are reputed as some of the world’s fastest long-distance runners, also call the Copper Canyon home. Notably, the Copper Canyon is even bigger than the famous Grand Canyon in the United States.
To fully experience the Copper Canyon, take a train ride on the well-known El Chepe railway. Although the entire journey lasts approximately 13 hours, it’s worth disembarking at the midway point and spending a night or two (or even a few weeks) in the heart of the canyon. I did this and spent a total of three weeks exploring the entire region. The lodging options are incredible, including hotels situated right at the rim of Copper Canyon, near the railway.
During the winter months, you can visit Iztaccihuatl which is the third tallest mountain in Mexico. It’s located in the Izta-Popo Zoquiapan National Park and is also known as the “White Woman” in Nahuatl owing its name to its four snow-covered mountain peaks that resemble the head, knees, chest and feet of a woman sleeping. It’s a very popular spot for mountaineers that are looking for a climb that’s slightly harder than beginner level.

Nevado de Toluca is a stunning volcano located near the city of Toluca in Mexico. It is the fourth highest mountain peak in Mexico and is part of a national park. This extinct stratovolcano has 9 peaks and 2 lagoons – the Lagoon of the Sun and the Lagoon of the Moon. Activities like hiking and mountaineering can be done here. Apart from these, there are many other adventurous activities available for tourists to experience.
There are several activities such as mountain biking, rappelling, and climbing available in the area. However, it is important to get used to the high altitude and hire a tour operator if you wish to participate. Additionally, while hiking, nature lovers might enjoy spotting a rare breed of rabbits known as volcano rabbits.
This hidden treasure is worth a day trip if you’re in Mexico’s capital and I highly recommend it. However, please keep in mind that the base for the is at an altitude of 4000 meters and you may experience altitude sickness. During my visit, I had difficulty breathing and even felt bloated after taking just two steps.
It’s important to remember that people react differently to high altitudes. If you feel severe symptoms, it’s best to descend to lower altitudes and allow your body to acclimate. Altitude sickness can be deadly and should not be taken lightly.
The summit of Malintzin volcano is approximately 14,500 feet above sea level and in Mexico. The volcano is situated between Tlaxcala and Puebla states of Mexico. The lower slopes of the volcano are covered with forests and farmland, while the higher slopes are grasslands and rocky summits.
During the cooler months, you can visit La Malinche. This is a popular spot for people who want to prepare for higher peaks, as the climb from the start to the summit is less than 7 kilometers. However, if you plan to climb after a recent snowfall, it’s important to remember that you may need crampons and axes. Previously, La Malinche was considered unsafe due to incidents of assault, but now the situation has improved, and more tour operators are taking groups there.

The city is situated in the cool Apizaco valley and is about 7,900 feet above sea level. Although it’s warm in the summer, the temperature drops significantly during the winter months.
It is possible for Mexico to have snow during Christmas, it does not happen in every part of the country. Snowfall usually occurs only in northern states, which are also some of the coldest places in Mexico. Regions in the south and coastal areas usually do not experience snow during the winter months.
