Staying in Downtown Playa del Carmen

Playa used to be a small fishing village, but it underwent rapid development in tourism and population after the Cozumel ferry service started. Since 1995, the number of residents has increased by 10 times, with many now employed in the tourism industry catering to millions of visitors who stay in the hundreds of newly-built hotels and resorts. The downtown area features numerous resorts, primarily located along the expansive public beach that stretches throughout the town and beyond.

The vibrant atmosphere of Downtown Playa is concentrated in three areas: Quinta Avenida (5th Avenue), the beachfront, and Calle 12 Norte. Quinta Avenida spans four kilometers starting from Paseo del Carmen Mall in the southwest and ending close to the Paradisus Resorts in the northwest. The first three kilometers of Quinta Avenida are restricted to pedestrians, and they feature malls, street vendors, excellent restaurants, and comfortable bars.

The most recent and attractive area of town is located close to the Quinta Alegria shopping center. The beachfront has multiple beach clubs that offer music, cocktails, and food. Among them, Mamita’s Beach Club and Coralina Daylight Club are the most recommended. If you’re looking for nightlife, head to Downtown where you’ll find plenty of nightclubs on Calle 12 Norte located north of the Cozumel Ferry terminal. The biggest clubs with the wildest parties are Coco Bongo, Club Mandala, and Club and Bar La Vaquita, all three of which are sister properties of Clubs in Cancun.

Staying in North Playa del Carmen

The North Playa area located at the far end of Quinta Avenida boasts several luxurious resorts, residences, and restaurants along a beautiful beach. Although it is less crowded than Downtown, it is still within a reasonable distance; just a 20-30 minute walk (depending on the resort) or a quick 10-minute drive. This spot is perfect for travelers who want to experience everything the city has to offer. At the same time, it provides a peaceful retreat away from the party atmosphere for a restful night’s sleep.

Staying in South Riviera Maya

The South Riviera Maya, which lies between the towns of Playa and Tulum, has long stretches of white sandy beaches. Thanks to the reef and Cozumel, the waves here are gentle. The hotels are tucked away in the lush jungle and offer miles of unspoiled beaches.

The town that is located between Playa and Tulum is called Puerto Aventuras. It has several attractions such as the Dolphin Discovery park, resorts, and restaurants. This is where some of the biggest and most exciting adventure parks in Mexico are located, such as Xcaret, Xel-Ha and Río Secreto. Some of the biggest and most popular cenotes like Dos Ojos, Jardin del Eden, Cenote Azul, and more can be found here as well, as this place is also their home.

Staying in North Riviera Maya

The Riviera Maya is a coastal area that spans from slightly south of Cancun to just below Tulum, with Playa del Carmen situated in the middle. Additionally, it comprises Cozumel Island. The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, extending from Cancun to Guatemala, is situated in front of the mainland beach.

The North Riviera Maya, which is the area between Playa del Carmen and Cancun, is home to many spacious all-inclusive resorts. These resorts are nestled in mangrove forests and are situated along extended sections of shoreline that are safeguarded by the reef. Because of this, the waves are usually calm.

Apart from Puerto Morelos and Punta Maroma, the resort beaches located further out are less crowded since they are not within walking distance of any town. If you’re near Puerto Morelos, which is the more northern of the two towns, you can visit a botanical garden, Croco Cun Zoo, and some cool cenotes located inland. On the other hand, Punta Maroma has a relatively less crowded beach and offers dolphin encounters and more activities at Maroma Adventures.

The complex has a PGA golf course and El Pueblito village which resembles a very traditional Mexican city center and square with a chapel, art gallery, and restaurants. Guests can travel around the complex through a boat taxi on the lagoon, which is included in the hotel rates. Alternatively, they can also travel on foot or use the bikes available at the resort to ride along the nature trail.

Playa del Carmen Hotels – Expert Tips

  • To have a good time around Playa del Carmen, consider visiting Downtown for its nightlife, shopping, and dining options. Another great option is North Playa del Carmen, which is close to Downtown but less busy. If you prefer luxury, Mayakoba is a convenient resort complex close to Downtown. You can also explore South Riviera Maya for its cenotes, jungle, and beaches on the way to Tulum or go to North Riviera Maya for beaches and attractions on the way to Cancun.
  • Some of the top hotels in Playa del Carmen include Hotel Esencia, which is a luxurious boutique hotel, El Dorado Maroma, which is the best adults-only resort, and Hotel Xcaret Mexico, which is the best family all-inclusive resort.
  • Getting around Playa del Carmen is convenient as it is a small town. Most of the restaurants and shops are located within a 3 km section that you can easily cover on foot. Although Uber is not available here, you can easily find affordable taxis at designated stands or by flagging one down on the street. The taxis in this area have fixed rates printed on a chart carried by the drivers and they do not use meters. The rates are stated in pesos, but they also accept US dollars with the change given in pesos. However, it is better to pay in pesos because drivers do not use a currency converter and may charge a higher rate.
  • If you’re staying in downtown Playa or just going out for tours, it’s not worth renting a car to get there. Taking the ADO bus or pre-booking a shuttle is a better option. Private Transportation Riviera Maya is a good company to consider. A round trip shuttle for a family of 4 from Cancun Airport to Downtown Playa del Carmen costs around 100 USD and takes about 45 minutes each way. T
  • he ADO bus is the most affordable choice for transportation. For adults, tickets cost around 200 pesos (8 USD) per person, while children aged 6 to 12 only need to pay 110 pesos (5 USD). If a family of four purchased round-trip tickets, the cost would be roughly 55 USD, and the travel time would take around 1 hour and 15 minutes each way. Buses depart approximately every 30 minutes. To avoid any unforeseen delays, it is advisable to purchase tickets for specific time slots upon arrival at the airport instead of booking them online. For transportation from the airport to Playa del Carmen, taking a taxi can cost up to 1500 pesos (63 USD) one-way for a group of four, which means 3000 pesos (130 USD) for a round-trip taxi ride0
  • Driving in Playa del Carmen is easy if you choose to rent a car to explore the area. However, there are a few pedestrian-only streets in the downtown area that are clearly marked as off-limits to cars. Although there is a good amount of car traffic in the downtown area, finding a parking spot could be challenging. It’s worth noting that the traffic rules are similar to those in the United States. The highways are in good condition, and the streets have clear maps that are easily navigable with GPS. However, you should be aware of topes, which are speed bumps that can vary in height, steepness, and visibility. Some can be difficult to spot, which may lead to driver inconvenience. Additionally, left turns may be done differently than what you are used to. Please drive slowly when Downtown and stay aware of the following information: Standard left turns are generally permissible in Downtown, but not on highways. Drivers will usually need to utilize a retorno to execute a left turn, which involves taking a U-turn on an overpass. This can be done by passing the street you intend to turn onto, pulling into the far-right lane to access the retorno exit, proceeding to the overpass, making the left turn, and merging with traffic that is flowing in the opposite direction. You will then be able to turn right onto your desired street or reach your destination.
  • It is recommended to pay in pesos instead of dollars as it offers a more favorable exchange rate. Although almost every restaurant and shop accepts US dollars, paying in dollars may result in overpaying. This is similar to taxis as well.
